We have a Catahoula Leopard dog in our yard, his name is Turbo, and the children call him Nemo; but I’d like to think of him as Mac (named after the Leopard Macintosh OS). He has a lovely temperament; and from my observations, he is not a follower, since he refuses to do everything that the other dogs are doing; (could it be that he is partially deaf?).
He moves to the “beat of his own drum” and apparently he has his own set of rules. He does not give up easily and will stubbornly pursue his interests, even it means crying. When Turbo came as a puppy, the children were fascinated and amazed at him, seeing that he has eyes of two different colours. His blue eye is also called a “glass eye”.
I read that Catahoula Leopard dogs are mild in nature, highly intelligent, workaholics and protective. They are not high maintenance dogs. I understand too, that when a Catahoula is raised with children, the dog believes that it is his responsibility to look after and protect those children. This dog breed lives an average life span of 10 to 14 years; and since he has a white coat and/or face, as well as a glass eye, he may have some eye problems as he ages.
We also learned that this particular colored dog will most often have an 80% chance of developing deafness in one or both ears. Read more about the Catahoula Leopard Dog at terrificpets.com.
