The Ostrich Fern

We have many types of fern plants around our yard, we find them growing on the rocks, wall, trees, and even on our gate. One beautiful fern plant we have is the Ostrich Fern. ostrich fernThe Ostrich Fern (Matteuccia struthiopteris) is also known as the fiddlehead fern or shuttlecock fern. This plant prefers shaded areas. ostrich fernThe immature fronds, known as fiddle-heads, can be eaten and they are cooked as vegetables. They are said to be a good source of Vitamin A and C.

This fern plant is popularly grown for it graceful arching fronds (leaves) that resemble huge ostrich feathers.
