Photo: Good Friday’s Sprat

One of the meals we have on Good Friday is fried sprat. We eat it for breakfast or for lunch. I have a dozen sprats seasoned for frying today.spratTradition stipulates that very little work be done on Good Friday, and absolutely no manual labour. All cooking should be finished before 12 noon, no fire or stove should be lit after that time.

Today in Jamaica, the hours between 12 noon and 3:00 p.m. are spent in quiet reflection and thanksgiving for what our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ did for us. Jesus came and gave his life for our sins, so that we would not have to be punished for our sins and face eternal damnation and everlasting death.

Persons who go to church for Good Friday worship service usually wear black and white, or clothing in darker colours. On Easter Sunday however, we wear white or brighter colours in celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
