In our country, where sugar is one of the main export commodities, many homes across Jamaica have sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum) growing in their gardens. During my childhood, we also had sugarcane growing in our yard; and even our closest neighbour has a thriving sugarcane patch in her backyard. At the start of this month, we planted a few sugar cane stalks, and in just two weeks they have all sprouting new shoots. How wonderful! By next year this time, we should be reaping and enjoying our own sugarcane.
