Hello Ello

Yesterday I found an Ello Sphinx moth (Erinnyis ello) on our balcony; and at first I thought it was just a plain brown moth.  Ello Sphinx Moth (Erinnyis ello)However, in my attempt to sweep it off the floor, this plain looking moth opened its wings to reveal hind wings, each a beautiful orange colour with a wide black border. Ello Sphinx Moth (Erinnyis ello)This moth is male as it dark brown with a brown and black band running from its base to the tip. The female is light gray and have a few dark dots. Ello Sphinx Moth (Erinnyis ello)Ello Sphinx moths are found all year round; they feed on the nectar of various flowers. The caterpillars feed on the leaves of specific plants such as the papaya, guava, cassava, and poinsettia.
