Today’s photos are of the Jamaican News Bug (Gymnetis lanius beetle) on the blossoms of the Moringa oleifera (Miracle Tree).

The four black spots on the thorax are diagnostic for this Scarabaeidae family specie of beetles.

I read that this beetle is endemic to Jamaica, and because other related species have also been sighted in other Caribbean islands, it is described on page 50 of this link (@ digitalcommons.unl.edu/) as being widespread Antilles endemic.

I did not get to see it eating the petals, but I understand that this insect is a Flower Chafers beetle. It is also known to be scarab beetle and is therefore described as a scavenger.

This is the last photo I took of it before it flew away.
